Top ranked St. Johns ends C-L’s season

GOODRICH — The U.S. hockey team came up with the ‘miracle on ice’ three decades ago. For the Cros-Lex wrestling team, though, there was no ‘miracle on the mats’.

The Pioneers, after winning a semifinal match in the Division 2 team regional at Goodrich Wednesday night, had to face St, Johns, the No. 1 ranked team in D2 in the state, and the No. 4 ranked team in the country in the championship match.

The Redwings lived up to their billing and stopped Cros-Lex, 70-9. St. Johns had smoked Lapeer West, 80-0, in their semifinal match while the Pioneers defeated Clio, 43-30.

Coach Joe Lilly, who has a young Pioneer team, said meeting a team like St. Johns will be something for his wrestlers to remember.

“I wanted to let our kids go out and experience what it’s like to go against a nationally ranked team,” Lilly stated.

“They’re just phenomenal,” he continued. “Just watching them, they’re so physically dominating.”

The Pioneers’ lone victories in the title match came on a pin in 1:15 by Brandon Turner at 103 pounds and a 10-5 decision by senior Cody Dobson at 112 pounds.

At 189 pounds, Cros-Lex sophomore Tommy Geiser lost on a quick pin to St. Johns’ Taylor Massa. It will be a loss he probably won’t mind remembering - Massa, a senior on his way to the University of Michigan, has not lost a match in four years of varsity wrestling and is a three-time State individual champion.

In the semis, C-L had pins from Trevor Woodruff (119), Jeremy Wilson (171), and Robert Wait (215). Winning on decisions were Dobson (112), Kyle Waters (135), and Austin Woodruff (152). Garrett Seghi (140) and Khristian Burke (160) each won on a void.

St. Johns advances to the D2 team State quarterfinal in Battle Creek on Friday, February 24.
