Sanilac Academic Team announced

Elena Holley Elena Holley The 2013 Sanilac County All-Academic Team - the top scholars in this year’s graduating classes - has been announced.

Each of the principals of the seven high schools select up to five top students, who are ranked using a formula that weighs their grade point averages and college test scores.

First team

Larissa Duff, the daughter of Roger and Kimberly Duff of Marlette, is a Marlette co-valedictorian.

Larissa has participated in Business Professionals of America, band, quiz bowl, and Reenactment. She was a member of the English Academic Team, Rocket Club, and varsity cross country team. As a senior, she was captain of Marlette’s English Academic Team.

She will attend Amherst College in Massachusetts, where she has received the Amherst College Scholarship. Larissa plans to major in biology and enter veterinary school or medical school to become a veterinarian or biomedical researcher.


Elizabeth Hendra Elizabeth Hendra Elizabeth Hendra, the daughter of Jennifer and Tim Hendra of Sandusky, and Craig Innis of Mayville, is Sandusky’s valedictorian.

Elizabeth’s activities have included National Honor Society, Key Club, girls soccer, quiz bowl, band and jazz band.

She received the Oakland University Presidential Scholarship and the Geographic Region Award.

She plans to attend Oakland University to study pre-medicine.

William Herrmann III, the son of William Herrmann II of Brown City is a senior at Brown City High School.

His activities include cross country for 2 years, 1st place Math Academic Team 4 years in Port Huron, 1st place Math Academic Team 2013 at Saginaw Valley State University, HOSA Medical Math Competition at regional’s 1st place, and Boy Scout Troop 327 Eagle Scout and assistant scoutmaster.


Chelsea Phillips Chelsea Phillips William plans to attend Grand Valley State University, where he has received an Academic of Excellence Scholarship. He will pursue a degree in electrical engineering.

Elena Holley, the daughter of Dirk and Julie Holley of Marlette, is Brown City’s valedictorian.

Elena is president of the National Honor Society and has served as class secretary for 3 years. She has been on the varsity quiz bowl team for 3 years and served as team captain for 2, helping to lead the team the state championship tournament. She is also a member of the Spanish Club and Student Community Organization and active in Our Savior Lutheran church in Marlette.

Elena will attend Concordia University, Ann Arbor, where she intends to pursue a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. After graduating she intends to pursue a career as a biochemist in the field of medical research.


Racheal Kneebone Racheal Kneebone Racheal Kneebone, the daughter of Jeanne and Jim Kneebone of Lynn Township, is the Brown City salutatorian.

Racheal has been a member of the Brown City band for 7 years, the Math Academic Games team for 4 years, and the Sanilac FFA for 2 years, serving as president during her senior year. Racheal was part of the FFA Meat Judging Team at the FFA national competition.

Racheal has played piano for 10 years, competing at district and state solo and ensemble competitions. She has also been a member of the Bit O’ Mischief 4-H Club, where she has shown goats, pocket pets, rabbits, completed crafts, and competed in archery at the 4-H State Shooting Sports Tournament. She is active at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Racheal will attend Michigan State University, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in the Honor’s College. She will major in food science.


Florence Sobell Florence Sobell Stephanie Lerchenfeldt, the daughter of Corrie and Jack Revoldt, ranked third in her Brown City class.

Stephanie has participated in volleyball and basketball and track and is a member of the National Honor Society, FFA, band and the Math Academic Games Team.

She has been involved in blood drives, senior citizen prom, the Blessing Garden which provides fresh produce to those in need and other FFA and NHS projects.

Her goals are to attend Michigan State University, earn a doctor of veterinary medicine degree and establish a veterinary clinic.

Ryan Miller, the son of Carla and David Miller of Marlette, is a Marlette co-valedictorian.


Stephanie Lerchenfeldt Stephanie Lerchenfeldt Ryan is a member of Business Professionals of America, where he was a member of the Parliamentary Procedure Team. He is also a member of the National Honors Society and the Math Academic team. He is class vice president. Ryan is a member of the band program and the football and track teams.

He volunteered at blood drives and Lion’s Club fundraisers. He is a member at the First United Methodist Church of Marlette.

Ryan was a recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

He will attend Miami University of Ohio, which awarded him the Red Hawk Excellence Scholarship. He will participate in the honors program and plans to major in Management Information Systems.

Chelsea Phillips, the daughter of Gayle and Brian Phillips of Lexington, is a Croswell- Lexington High School Senior Scholar.


Jonathan Semeyn Jonathan Semeyn She has been active in track and field, cross country, National Honor Society, Math Academic Games and quiz bowl.

Her honors include the Presidential Academic Award, Indiana Wesleyan University President Scholarship, BWAC Academic Award- Cross-Country and Track, Academic All- State-Cross-Country, First Team All-League- Cross-Country and BWAC Honorable Mention-Cross Country and track.

Chelsea’s future plans include majoring in medical technology and humanities at Indiana Wesleyan University in the Honors College. She plans to work in a hospital as a clinical laboratory scientist, then earn a masters and doctorate so she can conduct research.

Jonathan Semeyn, the son of Katherine Quinn of Jeddo, is a Cros-Lex Senior Scholar.

He has been active in Academic Games, the National Honor Society, quiz bowl, drama, band, tennis and Boy Scouts.


William Herrmann III William Herrmann III Jonathan’s honors include Eagle Scout, First Chair Trumpet – Sanilac County Honors Band and BWAC Honorable Mention for Tennis.

He plans to attend Michigan State University to study physics.

Florence Sobell, the daughter of Henry and Julia Sobell of Lexington, is a Cros-Lex Senior Scholar.

She has been active in student council on the executive board, co-president of the National Honor Society, participated in varsity cross country, soccer and quiz bowl, enrolled in Making Visions a Reality, and served on the Pioneer Activity Leadership Council.

Her honors include the President’s Education Award, BWAC All-Academic Team for cross country and soccer, Soccer Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Best Midfield, BWAC Honorable Mention for soccer and cross country, 1st Place All-Academic Team, Division 2, 2nd Team All county for cross country, and Honorable Mention Blue Water for cross country.


Ryan Miller Ryan Miller Florence plans to attend Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology. She intends to attend medical school and become a trauma surgeon in a large metropolitan hospital.

Second team

The second team includes: Katie Aleck and Jennifer Kursinsky of Sandusky; Ellie Flaherty and Mikayla Shell of Cros-Lex; Laura Hindes of Carsonville-Port Sanilac; Jared Hutchens of Marlette; Allison Krause of Brown City; Kori Nunn and Tyler Talaski of Deckerville; and Kathleen Weller of Peck.

Honorable mention

Students receiving honorable mention honors include: Abigail Anderson and Angela Lasecki of Sandusky; Elizabeth Berry, Jonathan Brooks, Eric Johnston and Kaitlyn Rybarczyk of Peck; Ryan Davis, Brian Leen, Steven Siemen and Raymond Willett of CPS; Kevin Hammond, Neil McEachin and Karlee Shagena of Deckerville; and Anthony Kappen and Lotte van den Goor of Marlette.
